Primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) in patients with compromised bony or soft-tissue states, such as dysplastic hip, ankylosed hip, prior hip fracture, protrusio acetabuli, certain neuromuscular conditions, skeletal dysplasia, and previous bony procedures, is defined as complex primary total hip arthroplasty (THA). The existence of any of a range of concerns in a patient that may cause complications in the conventional process and must be planned for in advance to ensure a successful outcome for the patient is defined as a ‘complicated’ hip replacement, as opposed to a’standard’ hip replacement.
