Overview
A high tibial osteotomy is an orthopaedic surgical treatment used to treat a varus deformity caused by compartmental osteoarthritis. A surgical operation called a high tibial osteotomy realigns the knee joint. By preserving damaged joint tissue, this operation can delay or prevent the need for a partial or total knee replacement in some patients with knee arthritis.
HTO has two goals: to alleviate knee pain by moving weight-bearing loads to the relatively unaffected lateral compartment in varus knees, and to delay the need for a knee replacement by slowing or stopping medial joint compartment degeneration.
